Only one hundred days after being adopted to America from Korea, Hyunsu died tragically at the age of three years old. His horrific and senseless death could have been prevented. Sadly, Hyunsu is not the first adoptee to die at the hands of his adoptive parents- and he will not be the last. Until the world decides to take seriously the voices and stories of adoptees crying out against the oversimplified narrative of “adoption is beautiful,” adoptees will continue to perish with brutal tragedy. Sadly this point has been brought home with the latest news: Just three years after Hyunsu’s death is the murder of a little Indian girl adopted through Holt International. Hyunsu’s Legacy of Hope exists to give voice to these stories with the hope that future adoptees can be protected against senseless tragedies, as well as to make sure that adoptees know they are not alone in their journey. HLH wants to reassure adoptees that it is normal and natural to struggle with conflicted feelings. That it is okay to grieve, to hurt, and to talk about it. And most importantly, that we are not alone. Furthermore, abuse and neglect by adoptive parents must be acknowledged for the sake of better protections for adoptees, and in order to ensure that adoption agencies are held accountable. Safeguarding the welfare of all children is what makes us a humane and compassionate society.

현수희망재단은 앞으로 입양될 아이들이 무자비한 비극으로부터 보호 받을 수 있다는 희망의 이야기를 전달하기 위해 존재하고 있다. 또한 이런 입양인들이 결코 혼자가 아니라는 것을 알려주기 위해서이기도 하다. 현수희망재단은 입양아 자신들이 감정적인 갈등을 겪는 것이 당연하다는 것을 알려주기를 원한다. 입양인들이 비통해하고, 상처받고, 그리고 그런 갈등과 문제에 대해 이야기하는 것은 당연하다. 그리고 가장 중요한 것은, 그들은 결코 혼자가 아니라는 점이다. 또한, 그들이 양부모로부터 학대와 무시를 받고 있다는 것을 반드시 알려서 입양기관들이 책임을 지게 해야 한다는 것이다. 모든 아이들의 복지를 보호하는 것은 인도적이고 동정심 많은 사회를 만들기 위한 것이다.

This is not simply a resource for “abused adoptees”

HLH hopes to shed light on these truths not to blame or vilify any single entity, but rather to support and empower adoptees who have had complex adoption experiences--that they may feel loved, validated, and comforted. We seek to offer support and compassion for all adoptees. Even for adoptees who did not experience physical, emotional or sexual abuse, adoptees begin their lives with a traumatic loss- we lose not only our parents, but our entire families, people, culture, language, and origins. We lose everything and everyone and yet that loss is often times neglected by the very people entrusted to love and nurture us. Typically all of society, family, friends and fellow adoptees compound that trauma by telling us we should just be grateful. The dominant narrative forces adoptees to feel as though we are not permitted to interpret our lives beyond a happy ending. This was clearly not the case for Hyunsu and countless others. All adoptees experience loss and suffer tragic circumstances as children in order to be placed for adoption. The lack of active abuse within the adoptive family does not mean one has not suffered trauma and pain as an adoptee. There are many adoptees who had loving and well meaning parents; yet they still suffered from an ABSENCE of attentively responding to the inherent losses in adoption. This is an unintentional form of neglect that caused deep but invisible wounds. Feelings that became frozen and cut off because they were never validated; and these feelings now affect us as adults who are indeed survivors of childhood trauma. 

현수희망단체는 사실들을 알리기를 원할 뿐이다. 우리는 어떠한 단체를 탓하거나 비난하는 것이 아니다. 그런 것 보다는 복잡한 입양 경험을 했을 입양인 들을 지원하고 입양인들에게 힘을 불어 넣기를 바랄 뿐이다. 그들은 아마 사랑, 만족스러움, 그리고 편안함 같은 감정을 가졌을 것이다. 우리는 모든 입양인 들에게 지원과 연민을 제공하기를 원한다. 이것은 오직 "학대 받는 입양인들"을 위한 것이 아니다. 신체적, 감정적, 그리고 성적인 학대 경험이 없는 입양인들을 위해서도 존재한다. 이들도 역시 정신적인 외상을 갖고 새로운 삶을 시작하기 때문이다. 입양인들은 부모를 잃은 것 뿐만 아니라 모든 가족, 문화, 언어 그리고 자신의 출신도 함께 잃은 것이다. 그들은 모든 사람과 모든 것을 잃었는데도 불구하고 이들을 입양한 양부모들에게 잃어버린 것들에 대해 위로 받지 못하고 무시당하는 경우가 많다. 전형적으로 모든 사회, 가정, 친구, 그리고 다른 입양인 들은 학대 받는 입양아들이 이러한 고통을 말할 수 있다는 것만으로 만족해야 한다는 분위기에 그들의 트라우마는 더 악화되고 있다. 입양인들은 행복에 대해 자신의 삶을 해석할 수 없다는 것처럼 강요 받고 있는 것이다. 이것은 분명히 현수나 다른 많은 입양인들 만의 경우가 아니다. 모든 입양인들은 다른 곳으로 입양되면서 손실과 비극적인 환경을 경험하게 된다. 양부모로부터 단지 학대가 없다는 이유로 입양인 들이 트라우마와 고통이 없을 것이라고 생각해서는 안 된다. 사랑과 이해심이 많은 양부모들이 많다. 그렇지만 입양인들은 그들이 입양되었다는 자체에 배려하는 마음이 없다는 것에 고통 받고 있다. 이것은 의도치 않은 형태의 무시 이지만 깊은, 보이지 않는 상처를 유발 시킨다. 입양인들은 감정을 인정받지 못했기 때문에 감정이 성장하지 못하고 상처를 받게 된다. 그리고 그 상태로 어린 시절 트라우마를 겪은 어른이 되는 것이다.

Trauma are the feelings inside of you such as terror, fear, grief, sadness and helplessness that are not allowed to be expressed, heard, received, validated and soothed, which then become frozen in the developing brain and body as children. Trauma is a freezing of the emotions which are not allowed and results in a disconnection from ourselves and dissociating from our feelings as adults.” - Dr. Gabor Mate, physician and childhood trauma expert 

 

For decades the adopted child has routinely been expected to live pretending as if they are biological to the adoptive parents. Birth family, culture and race was never discussed. Adoption was a threatening and taboo subject. This is an all too familiar scenario for potentially hundreds to thousands of domestic and international adoptees impacted by misguided adoption practices for decades after the Korean War and the “baby scoop era”.  Oftentimes domestic adoptees have found out accidentally later in life they were adopted, hence the term “late discovery adoptees”. Adoptive parents intentionally hid from them they were not their biological child. International adoptees typically were expected to live as the “honorary white person” in their family. These roles were normalized for the adopted child, but in fact this is a serious parental failure that has a name. It is called “emotional neglect”.

오랜 세월 동안 입양된 아이들은 양부모가 친부모인 것으로 알고 살아야 한다. 원 가족, 문화 그리고 인종은 절대 거론되지 않는다. 입양은 위협적이고 금기시되는 주제이다. 이것은 한국 전쟁과 "베이비 스쿠프"시대 이후 수십 년 동안, 잠재적으로 수 백 수천 명의 국내외 입양아들이 잘못된 입양 관행에 영향을 받을 가능성이 있는 상황이다. 종종 국내 입양인들은 우연히 나중에 자신들이 입양되었다는 사실을 알게 된다. 이런 이유로 “late discovery adoptees”라고 불려 진다. 양부모들은 의도적으로 입양한 아이들이 자신들의 친자식이 아니라는 것을 숨긴다. 국제 입양인들은 전형적으로 가족 안에서 "명예백인" 으로 살아가길 기대 받고 자란다. 이러한 역할은 입양인들에게 일반적으로 받아들여지는데 현상인데, 심각한 부모의 실패 이다. Dr. Jonice Webb explains what this is in her book, “Running On Empty”:

“Childhood Emotional Neglect or CEN is a parent’s failure to respond enough to a child’s emotional needs.”

 

“Emotional Neglect is, in some ways, the opposite of mistreatment and abuse.  Whereas mistreatment and abuse are parental acts, Emotional Neglect is a parent’s failure to act.  It’s a failure to notice, attend to, or respond appropriately to a child’s feelings.  Because it’s an act of omission, it’s not visible, noticeable or memorable.  Emotional Neglect is the white space in the family picture; the background rather than the foreground. It is insidious and overlooked while it does its silent damage to people’s lives. To this day, Emotional Neglect has been overlooked. As Dr. Webb explains, these wounds do not have to be physical, much of the suffering in adoption is psychological- unaddressed pain by uninformed or misguided parents. In that sense the majority of adoptees in the past six decades of adoption may have suffered some form of emotional neglect.  We can think of it as a neglect of our true selves in favor of the adopted self. As adoptees, our very lives are based on living the adopted life with the false self which means that the authentic self must be pushed to the background. Here is a statement from an adoptee raised with loving parents, yet suffered a tremendous amount of emotional neglect and was forced to develop a false self for years to survive: 

“We believe that we're who this false self is when all along we've had this authentic self hiding away in our souls. No wonder we're depressed, anxious, sad, angry! It's so imperative to get in touch with the hurting inner child and reparent her. It's been transformational for me. I tried so hard for so long to push away the shame, sadness, and loneliness, and I realize now that was my inner child trying to communicate with me. When I pushed her away, I was abandoning myself which I don't want to do. It hurts to get in touch with and sit in those difficult and negative emotions, but when you do, you will find yourself connecting to your core self, and that's the best part. I'm actually learning to love myself for the first time.”

왜브 박사가 설명한 대로, 이러한 상처들은 신체적인 것이 아니라 정보가 없거나 잘못 이해하고 있는 부모들에 의해 입양이 심리적인 고통을 받고 있다는 것이다. 지난 60년 동안 입양아들의 대부분은 정서적 무관심으로 고통을 받고 있다. 입양아들은 입양된 삶 자체를 위해 진정한 자신의 모습이 외면 당한다고 생각한다. 입양아로서, 우리의 삶은 거짓된 삶으로 살고 있다고 보는데 우리의 진짜 모습은 숨겨져야 된다고 강요 받고 있다. 여기 양부모로부터 많은 사랑을 받고 자란 입양아의 이야기가 있다. 그렇지만 그는 많은 정서적 무관심으로 고통 받았고 살아 남기 위해 몇 년 동안이나 거짓된 모습으로 살아야 했다:

 

​"우리는 내내 이러한 거짓된 모습이 우리 자신이라고 믿어왔다. 우리의 진짜 모습은 영혼에 숨겨두고 있었다. 우리가 우울하고, 불안하고, 슬프고 그리고 화가 나는 것은 당연하다! 상처받고 있는 아이와 만나 다시 그녀를 양육해야 하는 것은 반드시 필요한 일이다. 나에게 변화가 일어 났다. 나에게 있는 수치심과, 슬픔 그리고 외로움을 밀어내기 위해 오랫동안 노력했고 내 안에 있는 어린 시절의 내가 지금의 나와 대화하기를 원한다는 것을 깨달았다. 내가 어린 시절을 내 안에서 밀어냈을 때 나의 진짜 모습은 버려졌었는데 그것은 진정으로 원하는 것이 아니었다. 내면의 나와 접촉하고 마주앉아 있다는 것은 어렵고 부정적인 감정 들이었지만, 네가 그것을 한다면 너 자신과 이야기하는 너를 발견하게 될 것이다. 그게 가장 중요한 점이다. 난 실제 처음으로 나 자신을 사랑하는 있는 중이다."

 

However adoptees coped with the primal loss of parents is individual, but many of us survived that loss entirely on our own as children and the trauma still exists today. It is time to acknowledge the trauma and loss inherent to the adoptee experience--regardless of whether we find ourselves in a loving family or not. Trauma and grief are a natural part of the adoptee journey. It is nothing to be afraid or ashamed of. HLH recognizes the unique circumstances and challenges that adoptees face without pathologizing or patronizing adoptees. Grief, loss, anger and sadness are all a normal part of the adopted life. Adoption can be a complicated lifetime journey of processing ambiguous and unresolved grief due to the trauma of losing one’s family and origins.

 

HLH was founded by compassionate adoptees for adoptees, whether there was active abuse or emotional neglect or both. After 65 years of international adoption, there is finally an organization that validates the neglected feelings of loss and/or abuse adoptees have experienced in adoption. The innocence of a child who paid the ultimate sacrifice allows us to be vulnerable with our frozen, buried or invalidated emotions. We can find the courage to acknowledge our own pain and that of others; and to offer compassion, dignity and respect to each other in Hyunsu’s memory.
